Botanical Note from a Botanist – Asteracantha vs Hygrophila

As per our B.Sc. Botany studies, we learned it as Asteracantha longifolia (L.) Nees. This name is still used in Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India and older floras. Currently, as per Kew’s Plants of the World Online, the genus Asteracantha has been merged into Hygrophila, and the accepted name is Hygrophila auriculata (Schumach.) Heine. Both are synonyms for the same plant. Family: Acanthaceae.

As per Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, Guduchyadi Varga:

इक्षुरः क्षुरकः प्रोक्तः कोकिलाक्ष इति स्मृतः ।
इक्षुरको मधुरोऽम्लः शीतः पित्तानिलापहः ।
बलकृद्वाजीकरो वृष्यो रक्तपित्तहरः स्मृतः ॥

Transliteration: Ikshurah kshurakah proktah Kokilaksha iti smritah, Ikshurako madhuro-amlah sheetah pittanilapahah, Balakrid vajikaro vrishyo raktapittaharah smritah.

Meaning: Known as Ikshura and Kshuraka, Kokilaksha is sweet-sour in taste, cooling, pacifies Pitta-Vata, gives strength, is Vajikara and Vrishya. For detailed classification, refer to Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
